More and more Americans are losing their struggle to stave off poverty in a tenaciously stubborn economy. The United States Census Bureau released a frustrating report Tuesday. More American's are now existing below the poverty threshold than ever before since the bureau began maintaining the record in 1959.

Has not been like this since 1993

The national poverty rate last year hit 46.2 million individuals, up from 43.6 million in 2009. About 52 years ago, records started to be kept. We are at the highest rate since then. All numbers from 2010 are "approaching amounts not seen since Lyndon B. Johnson launched the War on Poverty in 1965." This is ridiculous, the Los Angeles Times said.

The poverty rate rose 0.8 percent from last year to 15.1 percent, the highest percentage since 1993, which also topped out at 15.1 percent.

Individuals making less too

There was also a reduction in the median household revenue. At the end of 2010 the average American made $49,445, which is down 2.3 percent from 2009. There was also an increase in the number of Americans without medical insurance to 49.9 billion. The number of children living in poverty rose from 20.7 percent to 22 percent.

Going to see the trend keep going

This year, the numbers are likely to follow the same trend. Don't expect it to be better. This year, the nation had to deal with a financial rating downgrade. Unemployment is at over 9 percent still.

For one person, the poverty threshold was at $11,139 in 2010 while it was $22,314 for a family of four. Revenue doesn't contain food stamps or tax credits. Those counting might have helped the statistics. It would have taken individuals out of poverty. Several could be pushed over with joblessness benefits also.

Might be worse

The poverty level in the nation is downplayed, some experts believe. This is because of several factors. Young adults aren't able to discover work several times. They end up on their parent's income in these cases. Fifty years back, the poverty threshold was created. That is why many experts ignore it totally.

A package could go through

Obama is hoping to get some votes back. He has a $450 billion jobs creation bill he is pushing. The report is sure to heat up the discussion over what role the government should take in assisting the needy at a time when budgets are being slashed.

Poverty rate is fairly high

The United States has long been ranked as having one of the world's greatest poverty rates in a developed nation. Only Chile, Israel and Mexico have higher poverty rates.
