College application counseling can be beneficial for students who are looking for someone to help them make the best post secondary choice. Considering cost, location, academic programs and fit are all very important factors.

A person who is trained in post secondary planning will help guide a student in making the right choice for them. One of the many obstacles that students and adviser's face when discussing options are the parents. Often the parents want to make the decision for their child, which can be disadvantageous if the child does not have the same goals and aspirations as their parents. While parental advice and guidance is important, and because a lot of parents are contributing to the cost of college, it is important to have the voice of the parents heard. However, adviser's will want to focus on the wants and needs of the student for whom they are providing assistance.

Knowing what one likes to do is often more important than knowing exactly what they want to do. Choosing a major that encompasses the interests of the student is important to life fulfillment. Often students will change their mind about a major after exploring other options. Therefore, it is important to make sure that other majors exist so that the student does not have to change institutions to obtain the degree they seek.

Secondly to academic programs is cost. Whether the student is paying for their education themselves or they are getting help from their parents, the cost of attending will most always play a role in the ability of the student to enroll. Families will want to make sure to fill out the necessary paperwork for financial aid, which often includes the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA form. This will calculate the family's expectant contribution and offset that with loans that the student may be eligible for. It is extremely important to choose a college that is affordable because the student will not likely be able to attend if they cannot cover the cost of being educated.

Students should not only choose an institution for the cost and programs it offers, but should also consider where the school is located. It is important for the individual attending to know what their likes and dislikes are. Whether the campus is large or small, or is surrounded by a big city or a small town may play a role in the selection process.

Visiting campus to understand how one feels walking around is important. What can be a great fit on paper may turn out to be a disaster in reality. Prospective students should take the time to talk to current students and faculty so that they can gain an understanding of what campus life is like. If possible, prospective students may want to consider sitting in on a lecture so that they can get an understanding of what it feels like to be a student.

Submitting an application is the last piece after the student has narrowed down their choices. Most applications are done through an online system. Standardized test scores, an essay and transcripts, along with letters of recommendation are necessary components. Most higher education institutions require a certain grade point average and test scores from either the ACT or SAT. Prospective students should be aware of what these scores are to ensure that they meet the minimum requirements for admission.

College application counseling is important for students who are trying to make the right choice. Students should pay careful attention to criteria and deadlines for submission. When possible, they should visit campus and speak to current students and faculty about their experience.
