With the recession that is affecting firms across the nation, employee reward and recognition programs are often the first areas to be done away with or neglected in order to protect its bottom line. On the balance sheet this may look good, but it is capable of being disastrous to retention, hiring and the overall business long-term success. Rewards and recognitions are not restricted to monetary limits, but include numerous non-monetary practices that can enhance productivity and morale.

Recognition and awards are presented when an organization plans to motivate its workers into accomplishing a specified goal, or when the employees have achieved a certain organization objective. The rewards may vary in definitions, but convey the same point is distinguishing and motivating employees. The awarding can take place anytime, mostly during the beginning, midway and finish of a firms goal, as long as they set the incentives to match the firms missions and goals. When implemented correctly, recognitions and awards help in aiding a company in pursuing strategic and organizational goals.

In a global economy that has many businesses competing for customers, a company must be able to properly compensate and motivate workers or risk being left behind the competition. It may also risk workers with knowledge of how the organization runs leaving for competitors.

On the rewards, understanding several factors are deemed important, such as human beings need for acceptance and recognition, how these two help this need, and the benefits of having the system in place. Also, it is important to know the merits that come with the system, and the numerous various types of monetary and non-monetary aspects of such a program.

The yearning for recognition affects both the personal life of a person together with his professional life. Where that individual works does not have to be an unpleasant and stressful environment. By recognizing the hard work of workers and dully rewarding them, this can reduce the stress and difficulty found in the workplace. Such a worker who feels appreciated and loved will definitely put more effort to be productive, hence becoming an asset to the firm.

It is undeniable that a rewards and recognition program in a firm is imperative. With it come not only benefits to employees, but also company gains. Comic strips and cartoons often feature a farm owner dangling a stick with a carrot in front of an oxen yoke to motivate them to move forward. A similar principle applies to benefits.

The farmer has goals to be accomplished but must find means of stimulating the work of his help. An executive or manager offers a desirable award to workers to keep them moving forward and motivated. By being offered a carrot, the oxen yoke gets an award while the farm owner gets his goals accomplished in time. With the program, workers get rewarded for performing the right work while the firms goals are met.

The earliest and top benefit of production is the firms workers. Considering the current economic times whereby things are always changing, it is easy to take the workers for granted. This can be avoided by putting in place reward and recognition programs for appreciating their value.
