Strict methods of medical waste disposal TN must be employed at all times to ensure public safety. These methods are enforced by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Division of Solid Waste Management. Sharps, such as needles and syringes that have been put to use, are items of particular concern, because of the possible infections that they could cause.

Most people are aware of the fact that diseases such as HIV, AIDS, hepatitis B and hepatitis C are present in society. These types of diseases are passed on through blood and certain body fluids, and they can be contracted through used needles and syringes that are infected. There have been cases where this has happened, and it is therefore very important that sharps are correctly disposed so that future accidents can be avoided.

In a home environment, the persons involved will need to place the needles into a plastic or other sturdy container that cannot be punctured. Local pharmacists sell special containers for this purpose, or you can use something like a coffee can or plastic bottle. The container must have a lid, so that it can be properly closed once the needles have been placed inside.

Although the needles are now properly contained, the holder must still be marked. This warns others of its potentially harmful contents. Either buy labels for your holders, or attach masking tape which can be written on with a permanent marker pen. You should indicate that the holder contains bio-hazardous material.

Once the containers are properly labeled, they can be thrown out at a nearby landfill, or simply placed in the garbage. The procedure is similar in a hospital, but here there is equipment that is dedicated to this purpose. The nurses, doctors and personnel who may come into contact with hazardous materials also receive training regarding this matter. Training could be provided by institutions such as the Red Cross and the Occupation Safety and Health Administration.

If the correct procedures are followed it reduces the risk of infection. Doctors and nurses are trained to always wear latex gloves, and to handle their patients in the right manner. A patient should be warned that they are to have an injection so they do not move unexpectedly. A sudden jerk from the patient could cause the nurse to be pricked.

Medical professionals are also trained to pass sharps to others in containers, and not from one hand to another. The containers are referred to as sterilized basins. Hospitals, due to their larger rubbish disposal needs, have usually contracted outside companies to take away their disposed hazardous material.

When someone has been injured by a sharp it is important to report the incident as soon as possible. Blood tests will need to be taken from all who were involved. Since that diseases can be carried in used needles and syringes, it is crucial that the correct methods are followed regarding medical waste disposal TN.
